Kim Cunningham, Director of Student Support Services

Welcome to Student Support Services.  My job is to provide support for our students and staff to ensure all learners have access to an education that enables them to reach their full potential.

A major component of student support services is special education.  Special education is the practice of educating students with special educational needs in a way that addresses their individual differences and needs.

Common special educational needs include specific learning disabilities, speech and language issues, developmental delays, autism, traumatic brain injury, medical or physical impairments, hearing or vision difficulties, or other unique medical needs.  Students with these kinds of special needs are likely to benefit from additional educational services such accommodations in the way material is presented or assignments are completed, support from additional staff members, support classes such as homework help or tutoring, technology assistance, or services from speech, occupational therapy or physical therapy providers.

If you believe your student needs some extra help or support, please talk about your concerns with the classroom teacher so we can address them.

In addition to student supports, I also oversee state and federal testing and all federal programs for the district.

About Me:  This is my second year with HBSD. I am originally from Texas, but spent time prior to moving to Haines overseas, where I was the principal of an international school in Kuwait and a public school the United Arab Emirates.  I have 23 years of service in education, eight in teaching 4th grade through high school, and fifteen year's experience as an administrator in Texas and abroad.  My family (Steve, Patrick, Sophia) and I are thrilled that we get to call Haines our home, and hope to stay here for many years!
