CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS
My classroom expectations are pretty straight forward. Physical Education is just that. Physical! Without participation the class would just be called Education. As such, participation, is the critical component and my primary assessment tool for a successful grade evaluation.
Middle and High school Physical Education
Each day, all students will receive a grade from 0 to 5. Five being the highest passible grade for the day. I will never grade on performance (i.e. make 10 free-throws for an A. Make 8 out of 10 free-throws for a B. Run a 6 minute mile for an A, etc.) To receive the maximum points possible for the session, the student must: • Show up on time. • Dress down. Appropriate attire for physical activity. Something different from what is being worn during the school day in the halls. • Be excited for class or at least give the illusion of being engaged. • Fully participate. • Be respectful. • Follow directions. • Be supportive of classmates. • Help with clean up.
Point will be deducted for the following reasons (not limited to): • Unexcused tardys. • * Unexcused absences. • Not dressing down for class. • Refusing to participate. • Minimal effort or complete lack of effort. • Disruptive. Uncooperative. • Not following directions. • Attitude. • Disrespectful to the teacher, substitute, or guest instructor.
*Unexcused absences result in an automatic zero (0) for the session.
I absolutely understand that everyone has days were they just “don’t have it.” I get it, and will never force a student to participate if there is an underlying circumstance. However, if the excuses are many and short between then there will be a home phone call to discuss the situation. • My stomach aches. • I hurt my knee in practice. • I’m just not feeling it today. My responses are typically, “No worries, do what you can.” “Let’s find something that you can do.” “Sit out if you have to. And I hope you feel better.”
I will definitely work with the student.
If a student just flat out refuses to participate in the daily activity or any alternative activity then additional “paperwork” will be assigned to be completed during the class period and graded as with any other assignment.
Elementary Grades (K-6)
As with the Upper School grading protocols, participation, will be the driving force behind assessment. However, I will also consider cooperation and following directions. Each quarter. The students will receive as many as 10 points for each of the above mentioned variables. Zero (0) being the lowest possible score and 10 being the highest. If a student consistently demonstrates genuine enthusiasm for the class, tries everything, limits complaining, is not disruptive, is considerate of their classmates and follows directions then they will more than likely receive a full score of 10. If the student recurrently deviates from the evaluation markers mentioned above then the grade will be reflected accordingly.
