Language Arts and Social Studies

Overview: I integrate language arts and social studies together as much as possible. Students have me for these two core classes. Students do not often get separate language arts and social studies homework; I make one homework assignment that integrates reading, writing, and history. There are periodic separate paper deadlines for language arts that are posted in class.

Language Arts: During class we focus on reading, writing, speaking, and grammar. Students read selections from the literature book and novels. Students will write realistic fiction, persuasive, descriptive, literary, and research papers.

Social Studies: During their 7th and 8th grade years, students will study American and World History from the fall of the Roman Empire and until the end of World War II. Specific topics covered in the curriculum can be seen in the Curriculum Guide: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B9Vxb1GNV5Y5OFZzRlRSYTFKSEU/view

Students participate every other year in National History Day. History Day is more than just a report. The students are required to research and think like historians and give their opinions on the effect of their topic on history. The final project can be a research paper, exhibit, documentary, performance, or website. This year we will be participating in History Day and the theme is Breaking Barriers in History.

Syllabus: Every unit has a syllabus or list of homework assignments for each day. Students and parents use the syllabus to see what they have to do for homework. These assignments are often background reading for the day’s topics of learning. The syllabus is a great tool so that parents and students always know what coursework is expected. Students can also use the syllabus to plan ahead if they are traveling or busy with other commitments. The syllabus is emailed home and posted on the website.

Absent Policy: Students have the same amount of time they miss school to make up assignments. For planned absences, parents and students fill out the Planned Absent form available in the office a week in advance of a planned absence that is longer than a couple of days.

Homework/Assignment Policy: No late homework accepted.

Some projects and assignments may be accepted late for reduced points-see each assignment directions for grading policy.

Grading Policy: Non-weighted standard grading. Students are expected to check their grades weekly on Powerschool.
